PDMS and the outside world |
| PDMS maintains a database that was designed to contain all data that are vital to the
unit it manages. Much of this information for example day-to-day treatment data -
is only relevant to the unit itself. Some information must be shared with other entities in the world outside the unit and for some information PDMS is not primarily responsible for example the patients name, address and insurance data that are generally managed by the hospital information system. |
Connecting possibilities |
| PDMS was designed to be able to exchange data as easily as possible. Data in PDMS are therefore available in a variety of ways: MS-Office tools, MicroSofts Opend Database Connectivity, the HISLink- and the HL-7 server. |
Implementing connections |
| The simplest way is through standard MS-Office tools. With these tools, all
data in the database can be accessed and additional functionality can be developed. The second approach is by using MicroSofts Opend Database Connectivty (ODBC) that provides a generic database interface to applications that want to access the PDMS database. Thirdly, PDMS can be extended with the HISLink server that enables it to communicate with the local hospital information system. Typically the HISLink server is used to import HIS-managed patient data into PDMS and to export HIS-relevant treatment data (such as medical interventions or discharge data). The latest development concerns a PDMS HL-7 server that provides a general HL-7 interface to the PDMS database. This server is primarily developed to integrate PDMS with clinical monitoring systems such as CareVue of Agilent Technologies (formerly known as Hewlett-Packard) but is expected to have a far wider use |
